Terrarium, or not terrarium
September 9, 2007
Today I’ve decided I’ll create a terrarium!! My uncle crafted a beautiful custom one for my mum many years ago, and it’s just been handed down to me.
S$o I’ve been googling what i need to know.. here’s a summary for me to refer to when I head off to the shops..
* Terrariums should never be grown in FULL sun!
Layers:
Bottom: at least an inch of pea gravel, pebbles or coarse sand.
Next: thin layer of activated charcoal
Next: thin cover of sphagnum moss
Top: Soil – one part sand, one part humus, two parts soil
Then add landscape accents such as driftwood, stones etc to add interest, and then plant up! I haven’t quite decided which plants I’ll use – I’ll take a look at what my local nursery offers. ..
Water little bit by little bit. A balanced terrarium should have a certain amount of moisture on the glass, but make sure there are no big droplets.
Generally terrariums shouldn’t need fertilizing, but if you notice they plants are malnourished, feed a quarter of the strength of all purpose house plant food.
All this is summarized from The Garden Helper
So.. I’ll update this blog with my progress…
